The 97th Academy Awards, held on March 2, 2025, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, celebrated the cinematic achievements of 2024. Hosted by comedian Conan O’Brien, the ceremony was broadcast live on ABC and, for the first time, streamed on Hulu, attracting an audience of 19.69 million viewers in the United States.

The evening’s top honor, Best Picture, was awarded to “Anora,” a compelling drama that resonated with both audiences and critics. The film’s director, Sean Baker, received the Best Director award, marking his first win in this category. “Anora” also earned accolades for Best Original Screenplay and Best Film Editing, bringing its total to five awards.

In the acting categories, Mikey Madison’s portrayal in “Anora” earned her the Best Actress award, making her the first member of Generation Z to receive this honor. Adrien Brody secured the Best Actor award for his role in “The Brutalist,” adding a second Oscar to his career achievements. Zoe Saldaña made history as the first Dominican American to win an acting Oscar, receiving Best Supporting Actress for her performance in “Emilia Pérez.” Kieran Culkin was honored with Best Supporting Actor for his role in “A Real Pain.”

“Emilia Pérez,” despite leading with 13 nominations, secured two awards: Best Supporting Actress and Best International Feature Film. The musical adaptation “Wicked” garnered recognition in technical categories, winning Best Production Design and Best Costume Design. Notably, Paul Tazewell became the first Black man to win Best Costume Design for his work on “Wicked.”

The Best Animated Feature Film award went to “Flow,” an independent film that broke a nine-year record by winning in this category. In the documentary category, “No Other Land” became the first Palestinian film to win an Academy Award, with co-director Basel Adra making history as the first Palestinian filmmaker to receive an Oscar.

The ceremony also included honorary awards presented at the 15th annual Governors Awards on November 17, 2024. Quincy Jones was posthumously honored for his artistic genius and trailblazing legacy in film music. Juliet Taylor received recognition for her influential work in film casting, and Richard Curtis was awarded the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for his charitable efforts. Additionally, Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli were presented with the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award for their contributions to the film industry.

The 97th Academy Awards not only celebrated outstanding cinematic achievements but also marked several historic milestones, reflecting the evolving landscape of the film industry.
